Phra Nang Phaya – The Queen of Thai Amulets

Phra Nang Phaya, often hailed as the “Queen of Amulets,” holds a revered place in Thai spiritual heritage as part of the prestigious Benjapakee set. Crafted in a distinct triangular form, the amulet features an image of the Buddha in the subduing Mara posture—left hand resting on the lap, palm upward, and the right hand extended over the knee, touching the earth. This iconic gesture signifies enlightenment, inner peace, and triumph over adversity.

The origins of Phra Nang Phaya trace back to the Ayutthaya period in Phitsanulok province. Around B.E. 2106 (A.D. 1563), Queen Wisutkasat, consort of King Mahathammarachathirat, commissioned the creation of these sacred objects amid the unrest of war. The first batch, possibly produced under pressing circumstances, was intended to serve as protective talismans for soldiers facing the turmoil of battle.

Following King Mahathammarachathirat’s reign, his son King Naresuan ascended the throne in B.E. 2133 (A.D. 1590). After securing victory, the new monarch began restoring several significant temples built by his parents—Wat Nang Phaya, Wat Phra Sri Rattanamahathat, and Wat Rajburana. He also authorized a second production of Phra Nang Phaya amulets, this time with refined craftsmanship. Surplus amulets were enshrined within the pagodas of these temples, and their consecration was solemnly performed at Wat Phra Sri Rattanamahathat under the guidance of esteemed monks.

Centuries later, in B.E. 2444 (A.D. 1901), during the reign of King Rama V, a hidden cache of these amulets was discovered within Wat Nang Phaya as the temple was being prepared for the King’s visit. The relics were presented to the monarch, who distributed a portion to his officials. The remaining amulets were transported to Bangkok for safekeeping at Wat Inthrawiharn.

Today, Phra Nang Phaya amulets remain highly coveted by both spiritual devotees and collectors. They are venerated for bestowing protection from harm, enhancing personal charisma, and attracting respect and admiration.
