Phra Rod
"Phra Sukaputtapatima" refers to amulets created by hermits like Phra Perm, Phra Bang, Phra Khong, Phra Liang, and Phra Rod, originating from Lumpoon province in 1223. The legend states this land was once ruled by the Mengkabutt tribe. Lord Buddha visited the area and predicted that part of his ashes would be kept in a pagoda. By 1008, five hermits—Phra Vasuthep, Phra Sukkatunta, Pumarnsree, Puttachadin, and Phra Suddchanarai—left monastic life to meditate and achieved Arpinya. They traveled across Thailand.
Phranang Jarmatavee, a noblewoman, built four key temples: Wat Dongaw (later Wat Chetawan), Wat PhraKhong (later Wat PhraKhongrorsee), Wat Mahawan (where Phra Rod was found), and Wat Phratoolee (used as a retreat during war). These temples housed the famous Lumpoon amulets.
The city of Lumpoon was founded after Phra Sukkatunta and Sutavarorsee's discussions. Phranang Jarmatavee’s family ruled until the city fell to the Ramun Dynasty in 1330. Though the city was later destroyed and rebuilt by King Mengrai, Lumpoon’s significance remained strong. Known for its ancient history, it has been home to many relics and amulets, including the famous Phra Rod.
Phra Rod, named after the hermit Narata (later "NaRod"), was created by 108 hermits using clay, medicinal herbs, and flowers. The amulets were blessed and given to soldiers. Phra Rod amulets, discovered at Wat Mahawan, are known for their unique colors—white, red, green, and brown—and are considered among the five most powerful amulets in Thailand.
These amulets, part of the “Five Grand” set (including Phra Somdej Wat Rakhang), are renowned for their protection, good fortune, and safety. Crafted in the style of early Lopburi, they are revered for their spiritual power and are highly sought after by collectors. The Phra Rod from Wat Mahawan remains a symbol of safety, fortune, and charm.
