Luang Phor Sothorn, formally known as Phra Phuttha Sothon, is among the most revered Buddha images in Thailand. It is enshrined at Wat Sothonwararam Worawihan in Chachoengsao Province, where it is deeply venerated for its sacred presence and the enduring legends associated with its origin.

According to tradition, the image was one of several Buddha statues discovered floating along the Bang Pakong River during the Ayutthaya period. Repeated attempts by local villagers to retrieve it were unsuccessful until they offered sincere prayers. Only then did the statue allow itself to be brought ashore at Chachoengsao, an event widely interpreted as a manifestation of divine will. It was subsequently enshrined at Wat Hong, later renamed Wat Sothonwararam Worawihan.

The Buddha image is depicted in the Subduing Mara posture, symbolizing the Buddha’s victory over worldly temptations and negative forces. While the original bronze core is believed to remain محفوظ within, the visible exterior today is a finely gilded plaster form, measuring approximately 1.65 metres in height and nearly 2 metres in width.

Luang Phor Sothorn is widely believed to grant blessings of protection, good health, prosperity, and safe travel. Devotees from across Thailand visit the temple daily to make offerings, including garlands, gold leaf, and boiled eggs—the latter traditionally associated with the fulfilment of wishes. The temple’s annual festival, usually held between March and April, features vibrant religious ceremonies and boat processions along the river.

Miniature replicas and amulets bearing the image of Luang Phor Sothorn are commonly worn by devotees seeking spiritual protection and good fortune. These sacred objects are typically consecrated through ritual practices, reinforcing their significance as instruments of faith.

Today, Wat Sothonwararam Worawihan stands as both a major pilgrimage destination and a cultural landmark, distinguished by its grand white ordination hall and serene surroundings. Despite modern developments, the temple’s spiritual essence remains firmly rooted in the deep devotion to Luang Phor Sothorn.

This sacred image continues to inspire millions, embodying hope, protection, and the enduring strength of faith within Thai society.
