The origin of the Ngang amulet, according to historical accounts found in palm leaf scriptures, traces back to its creation by a hermit with supernatural powers. This hermit imbued the Ngang with a spirit that granted luck, wealth, and charm to its owner. The tradition of crafting the Ngang began during the Suvarnabhumi period and continued through the late Ayutthaya period, which is regarded as the last era in which it was made by a hermit. Subsequently, the knowledge of creating the Ngang was passed down through generations, with masters from various disciplines applying this craft up to the present day.

The early Ngangs, particularly those with red-eyed bells, were rare. Some featured a bell, while others did not. They were made from a variety of materials, including the three kings, raw copper-colored bronze, bronze with a lotus flower hue, lead cast over another layer of lead, and in some cases, pure lead. Certain Ngongs were entirely made of lead. While some featured yantras (magical inscriptions) on the back, others did not—though those without yantras are more difficult to find. There were also some that had cloth patterns on their reverse side.

Rooted in the ancient Khmer Wicha (magical tradition), the Ngang is believed to attract wealth, enhance charm, and provide protection. It is particularly associated with drawing the attention of the opposite sex and improving business success.
