Luang Pu Sodh Candasaro (Ven. Luang Phor Wat Paknam)

Luang Pu Sodh was born on October 10, 1885 (B.E. 2428) in Suphanburi Province. He was the eldest of six children and was known for his hardworking and filial nature, caring for his mother with devotion for 19 years. In his youth, he earned a living by selling rice, frequently traveling between Suphanburi and Bangkok, often facing the dangers of being robbed along the way.

At the age of 20, he entered the monkhood, firmly determined to dedicate his life to the Buddha’s path and to pursue enlightenment through disciplined practice. As Abbot of Wat Paknam Bhasicharoen, he became widely respected for his sincerity, generosity, and unwavering support of the Dhamma and the Sangha. He came to be affectionately known as “Luang Phor Wat Paknam.”

Luang Pu Sodh was a disciple of Luang Phor Niam of Wat Noi. In 1916 (B.E. 2459), he attained the knowledge of Wicha Dhammakaya, a meditative insight he believed to be the original but long-forgotten path of inner realization. From that time onward, he devoted his life to teaching and reviving this profound practice, which later spread throughout Thailand and abroad.

Wicha Dhammakaya was regarded as an extraordinary meditative attainment, associated with abilities such as warding off misfortune, healing illnesses beyond the reach of conventional medicine, discovering hidden or lost objects, perceiving past and future events, and neutralizing harmful black magic. To his followers, it represented both a miraculous power and a path of deep spiritual transformation.

In 1950, he began creating amulets for donors who supported the construction of the great Dhamma school at Wat Paknam, a project that became one of his lasting legacies.

Luang Pu Sodh passed away in 1959 (B.E. 2502) at the age of 75. Remembered as a devoted practitioner of Vipassana Kammatthana (Buddhist insight meditation), he made immense contributions to the flourishing of Buddhism in modern Thailand.
