The Mystical Legend of Phra Kring: Sacred Healer of the East

Phra Kring, also known as the Medicine Buddha or Phra Buddha Bhaisajayaguru, holds a revered place in Mahayana Buddhism, especially in China, Tibet, and Taiwan. His presence in Thailand emerged through Chinese immigrants who brought with them the devotion to “Yau Shi Fwo” — the Medicine Buddha — as a source of protection and prosperity.

To accompany their journeys, these settlers created amulets of Phra Kring, said to emit a soft rattling sound akin to Mahayana ritual bells. Unlike Thai traditions, which emphasize yant and sacred metals like nava loha, Mahayana-style Phra Krings were crafted by merging precious metals with the spiritual essence of Bhaisajayaguru’s path to Enlightenment.

In Thailand, Phra Kring’s legacy dates back to the Ayutthaya era, during King Naresuan’s reign. Ancient scripts, or tamra, outlined how to craft these sacred amulets using over 108 yant in takrut form. Though the original texts were lost in wartime, the knowledge was preserved by Somdej Ma of Wat SamPloem and later passed to Somdej Pavarit of Wat Bovorn. Yet, Phra Kring remained obscure until Somdej Vanarat Daeng's miraculous healing sparked renewed interest in its power.

Inspired by his teacher’s recovery using holy water infused with a piece of Kring Pavarit, Phra Sangharat Pae of Wat Suthat dedicated himself to studying Phra Kring, eventually elevating its status. He believed Wat Suthat produced the finest Phra Kring due to its sacred stature—home to the great Phra Sisakayamuni, a Buddha image symbolizing victory over demons, housed in a realm guarded by celestial beings.

Until 1993, all Phra Krings from Wat Suthat were ritually cast within the temple’s Bot, a spiritually charged space under Phra Sisakayamuni’s watch. This sacred process imbued the amulets with profound palang saksit (spiritual power). In modern times, this tradition has faded, and current production methods remain shrouded in mystery, adding to the amulet's mystique.

The Heart of Phra Kring: Twelve Vows of the Medicine Buddha

At the core of Phra Kring lies the compassion of Phra Buddha Bhaisajayaguru, expressed through his twelve vows from the Medicine Buddha Sutra. These vows embody healing, enlightenment, and mercy for all beings:

1. Radiating Divine Light – Illuminates all realms, guiding beings toward Buddhahood.

2. Awakening the Mind – Inspires spiritual awareness through radiant lapis lazuli light.

3. Material Abundance – Grants prosperity and fulfillment of worldly needs.

4. Dispelling Ignorance – Eradicates heretical views, instilling true wisdom.

5. Healing the Sick – Offers relief from physical ailments and suffering.

6. Compassion for the Destitute – Brings solace to the impoverished and ill.

7. Supporting Transformation – Assists women seeking rebirth as men for spiritual progress.

8. Mental Healing – Eases delusions and mental afflictions with divine clarity.

9. Liberating the Oppressed – Frees beings from injustice and bondage.

10. Easing Hunger and Thirst – Provides sustenance to the starving.

11. Clothing the Poor – Protects the destitute from cold and harm.

12. Invoking Blessings – Through sacred Katha, devotees receive healing and enlightenment.

Phra Kring continues to be a symbol of divine compassion, healing, and spiritual guidance — a timeless guardian for those who seek both physical wellness and spiritual awakening.
