Luang Pu Thuat Krai (Luang Pho Krai of Wat Lamphaya)
Luang Pu Thuat Krai, also known as Luang Pu Thuat Somphan Than Chao Krai, was a revered monk of the Ayutthaya period, more than 400 years ago. A contemporary and close friend of Luang Pu Thuat of Wat Chang Hai, he was remembered as an Ariya monk of great merit and power.
Local tradition tells that his temple once stood in Lamphaya village, though no trace remains today. He was famed for extraordinary followers: a tiger king and two pairs of king cobras, earning him the names “Thuat Tiger” and “Thuat Ngu.” Around the Wat Lamphaya mountain range, villagers also spoke of mystical sites, such as Pha Nang Ram—where hunters claimed to hear music and see a dancing woman’s shadow—and Gandharva Cave, believed to connect with the realm of celestial beings. Villagers once borrowed ritual objects from the cave until greed closed the gateway forever.
Luang Pu Thuat Krai was known for his boundless compassion toward both people and animals. Even deadly cobras revered him as a protector. His most miraculous trait was his hair and beard, which turned into copper. Before Buddhist holy days, he would pray before shaving; without prayer, the copper strands could not be cut.
In 1962, his ashes were moved to Wat Lamphaya in a grand procession presided over by Phra Ajahn Tim of Wat Chang Hai. During the rites, villagers witnessed miracles, further strengthening faith in him. Through a spirit medium, Luang Pu Thuat Krai granted permission for his image to be cast in amulets—depicting him seated on a tiger, flanked by cobras, or accompanied by Gandharvas. He also revealed nine sacred materials to be used in their creation, including herbs, cave clay, temple relics, and his own ashes.
Consecrated over three days and nights with Ajahn Tim and other southern monks, these amulets became highly sought after, especially during unrest in the southern provinces. Many stories tell of soldiers, police, and villagers saved through their protection. To this day, Luang Pu Thuat Krai is venerated as a monk of immense spiritual power, remembered for compassion, miracles, and his unshakable presence in Thailand’s sacred history.
