Luang Phor Sothorn – Wat Sothonwararam, Chachoengsao

Luang Phor Sothorn, or Phra Phuttha Sothon, is one of Thailand’s most venerated Buddha images, enshrined at Wat Sothonwararam Worawihan in Chachoengsao Province. According to legend, the statue was among several Buddha images that drifted down the Bang Pakong River during the Ayutthaya period. After repeated failed attempts to retrieve it, villagers prayed sincerely, and the image miraculously allowed itself to be brought ashore—a sign of divine will.

Depicted in the Subduing Mara posture, the original bronze statue is said to be hidden within the current gilded plaster figure, measuring 1.65 meters high. Devotees believe Luang Phor Sothorn grants blessings of health, safety, prosperity, and safe travels. Offerings often include garlands, gold leaf, and boiled eggs, linked to answered prayers.

His image is celebrated in an annual festival featuring boat processions and ceremonies, and miniature statues and amulets bearing his likeness are highly prized for protection and good fortune. Today, Wat Sothonwararam remains a major pilgrimage site, where faith in Luang Phor Sothorn continues to inspire hope and devotion across Thailand.
