Luang Phor Pern: Wat Bang Phra
Luang Phor Pern of Wat Bang Phra remains one of Thailand’s most revered monks, renowned for his mastery of incantations, protective amulets, and Sak Yant (sacred tattoos), particularly those featuring tigers. During his lifetime, thousands flocked to Wat Bang Phra in Nakhon Pathom to receive his blessings.
Located beside the Tha Chin River, Wat Bang Phra dates back to the 18th century. Originally a modest chapel, it has since expanded into a spiritual sanctuary surrounded by nature, adorned with statues of Ruesi hermits, yantra masters, wild animals, and mythical beasts.
The temple became famous for its tiger amulets, initially created to protect villagers from wild tigers in the area. Luang Phor Pern’s powerful Sak Yant also gained a legendary reputation for granting protection, strength, prosperity, and good fortune.
Ordained at age 25, Luang Phor Pern studied under the famed Sak Yant master Luang Pu Him Inthasoto, inheriting his knowledge and continuing his legacy. Though he never received a Sak Yant himself, he dedicated his life to passing the tradition on.
One famous legend tells of a time Luang Phor Pern encountered a wild tiger during a forest journey. While his followers fled in fear, he calmly sat and meditated—causing the tiger to retreat peacefully. The tale spread quickly, and soon people from across the country sought his tattoos and amulets for protection. Remarkably, no recipient was ever harmed by a tiger again.
Luang Phor Pern passed away in 2002 at the age of 79, after 54 years as a monk. His mummified body is enshrined in a glass case at Wat Bang Phra, and a towering statue of him watches over the temple grounds.
Today, his legacy lives on. His amulets remain highly sought after, and images of Luang Phor Pern still adorn cars and homes across Thailand—symbols of enduring faith and spiritual protection.
