Wat Chalong & Luang Phor Chaem
 
Wat Chalong, the largest and most ornate of Phuket’s 29 Buddhist temples, is a spiritual landmark with deep historical roots. Known for its classic Thai architecture, it is closely associated with two revered monks—Luang Phor Chaem and Luang Phor Chuang—famed for their herbal medicine expertise and compassionate care for the injured. Statues honoring them stand in the temple’s sermon hall (viharn), where devotees still come to receive blessings and protective wrist charms.
 
Born in BE 2370 (1827), Luang Phor Chaem became a symbol of courage during the Ang-Yee Rebellion of BE 2419 (1876), when rioting Chinese tin-mining workers threatened Phuket. Refusing to flee, he inspired the locals to defend their community. Though bound by monastic vows from fighting, he organized resistance from within the temple grounds. A breach made in Wat Chalong’s wall during the battle remains visible today. With the later arrival of soldiers, the rebellion was quelled.
 
In recognition of his leadership, King Rama V awarded him the royal title Phra Kru Wisit Wongsacharn and appointed him as the regional abbot of Phuket and surrounding provinces. His reputation for healing grew, with many stories linked to his famed walking stick—believed to possess miraculous powers, including curing one of the King’s wives of a severe stomach ailment.
 
Luang Phor Chaem passed away in BE 2451 (1908) at the age of 81, leaving behind no personal wealth—only 50 satang—demonstrating his life of humility. His funeral was the largest ever held in Southern Thailand, drawing mourners from across the country and even from Malaysia. Today, his image remains a symbol of protection, compassion, and unshakable resolve for the people of Phuket.
