Luang Por Chern of Wat Khok Thong in Ayutthaya Province was a highly respected monk and spiritual master. He was born on 12 April B.E. 2450 (1907 C.E.), in the Year of the Goat, as the eldest child in his family, with two younger twin sisters.

His early life was marked by hardship. When he was five years old, his mother passed away, leaving the family in difficult circumstances. A few years later, his father sent him to study basic education under Luang Por Kup of Wat Ruechai, where he remained for two years. Demonstrating exceptional ability, he learned to read and write within a year.

Recognising his potential, Luang Por Kup introduced him to Luang Por Perm, the abbot of Wat Khok Thong and a renowned master in both Buddhist practice and occult sciences. Luang Por Perm, a disciple of Luang Por Klan of Wat Phraya Tikaram and a close associate of Luang Por Pan of Wat Bang Nom Kho, was well known for his spiritual attainments, including healing, exorcism, and protection against black magic.

Under Luang Por Perm’s guidance, the young Chern received extensive training in both Dharma and esoteric disciplines. His diligence, humility, and eagerness to learn earned him his teacher’s trust, and he was taught a wide range of advanced knowledge. During this time, he also had the opportunity to meet Luang Pu Suk of Wat Pak Khlong Makham Thao, one of the most revered masters of the period.

At the age of sixteen, he was ordained as a novice, and in B.E. 2470 (1927 C.E.), he received full ordination as a monk. By then, he had already developed considerable skill in meditation, scriptural knowledge, and sacred sciences. Notably, he mastered the preparation of sacred powders, which later formed the basis for the creation of many highly regarded amulets.

Luang Por Chern continued his studies with several distinguished masters. He briefly trained under Luang Por Klan in the early 2470s B.E., and spent several years studying with Luang Por Jong of Wat Na Tang Nok, travelling regularly between temples. He also learned from Luang Por Glai of Wat Hong Rattanaram in Bangkok while accompanying his teacher for medical treatment.

During his time in Bangkok, the outbreak of World War II interrupted temple activities. Luang Por Chern used this period to study traditional Thai medicine (Paen Boran) under the renowned Kru Nop of Talat Phlu for two years, further expanding his knowledge of healing practices.

In addition to his principal teachers, he sought instruction from several other eminent monks of Ayutthaya, including Luang Por Jeam of Wat Bua Hak, Luang Por Yim of Wat Chao Chet Nai, and Luang Por Pae of Wat Klang Khlong. Each contributed to his development as a well-rounded and deeply knowledgeable monk.

Luang Por Chern passed away peacefully on 21 January B.E. 2545 (2002 C.E.) at the age of 93, having spent 73 years in the monkhood. He is remembered for his wisdom, compassion, and mastery of both Buddhist teachings and sacred sciences, leaving behind a lasting spiritual legacy.
