Emerald Buddha: Sacred Symbol of Thailand

Housed in Bangkok’s Wat Phra Kaeo, the Emerald Buddha (Phra Kaeo Morakot) is one of Thailand’s most revered icons. Despite its small size, the statue holds immense cultural and spiritual power, with a mysterious past that stretches back centuries.

Discovered in Chiang Rai nearly 600 years ago after lightning struck a stupa, the statue was initially mistaken for ordinary stone. When its plaster coating chipped away, monks found a flawless green figure beneath. Named the Emerald Buddha, it quickly drew pilgrims from across the region.

The statue’s journey has been marked by legend and upheaval. Intended for Chiang Mai, it was diverted by a seemingly willful elephant to Lampang, where it remained until 1468. It later traveled to Laos, residing in Luang Prabang and Vientiane for over two centuries. In 1779, Siamese forces returned it to Thailand. King Rama I eventually enshrined it in Wat Phra Kaeo, Bangkok, in 1784—where it remains today.

Legends claim the statue originated in India in 43 BC, created by sage Nagasena, and was later taken to Sri Lanka, Cambodia, and finally Thailand. Scholars, however, suggest it’s from the Lannathai Chiang Saen style, dating to the 15th century.

Standing 66 cm tall and dressed in seasonal gold robes changed by the king himself, the Emerald Buddha’s exact composition—jadeite, jasper, or otherwise—remains unknown. Its age and sacredness make it a potent symbol of Thai identity and sovereignty.

Emerald Buddha enhances the prosperity of life with Buddhist mindfulness. The Emerald Buddha is a protective deity. Thai people and many Asian people believe Thai amulets have the power of attraction, luck, fortune, and charm, and they protect the wearer from danger and change terrible things for good.
